KTBA Update 15/01/24
BTBA announce Junior Tournament at Rochester Bowl
Memories of Brian (Buzz) Morrison 1930 - 2023
Written by Jerry Moll.
I was sad to learn of the death of Brian (Buzz) Morrison who passed on 30 April, aged 92. I first became aware of him when bowling in KTBA Area Championships and other local events. As a teen, I used to watch him and his wife Janet bowl and hope that, one day, I would achieve their level of skill. At that time, Janet was a member of the England ladies’ team.
In 1964, Brian was manager of Bexleyheath then Dagenham bowling centres as well as Chairman of the Kent and SEBA area associations. He was a great believer in the BTBA and he spent time encouraging bowlers to join the association
Martin Webster (BTBA) comments “I have fond recollections of Brian and Janet as I bowled in the Bexleyheath YBC at Bexleyheath where my parents, George and Jean, worked in the Club that was situated upstairs. Brian and Janet were a wonderful couple who were totally dedicated to the promotion of tenpin bowling in the UK.”
Brian was the country’s leading railway photographer and a regular contributer to specialist railway enthusiast magazines such as the “Railway Herald”. John Cudmore (ex KTBA Chairman) recollects that in honour of Brian’s achievements, Virgin Trains named one of its trains after him. One side of the loco was a plaque that bore Brian’s name and the other side, Janet’s. Should readers be interested to learn more of Brian’s photographic achievements, a Google search will pay dividends.
One of my special memories was Brian and Janet’s close friendship with Cuthbert Collingwood “Teddy” Tinling who bowled league with them at Bexleyheath. Teddy was a flamboyant character who, apart from being a war time spy, then author, and renowned fashion designer, particularly for creating colourful dresses for the leading tennis players of that time, including Chris Evert who was World number 1. Teddy is also well worth a Google!
Brian Morrison, a great ambassador of our sport.

KTBA Update 09/01/23
We have had a letter from Stuart Watson who is The BTBA Youth Inter County Youth Championships Manager, inviting us to enter teams for the Inter County Youth Championships 2023. Stuart wants us to let him know how many teams we are likely to enter by the end of January, however our trials do not take place until February / March. The Kent Trials entry form is now open, we hope to have an on line entry form available by the end of the week. Team Managers need to know how many entries we can anticipate based on the number of people that enter the trials. so please get your entries in ASAP!
Dear Secretary,
The Youth Inter County Championship for 2023 (YICC2023) will take place on 12 & 13 August 2023 at GOBowling Dunstable, Grove park, Court Drive, Dunstable, LU5 4JD. The championships will be presented by YBE on behalf of the BTBA.
Counties may enter 2 teams in both U16 and U22 Divisions (4 teams in total). Each team will register a squad of up-to 6 athletes and one squad per team. Athletes may only compete in the team to which their squad is registered. Teams can be be either single gender or mixed gender, with at least 1 male & 1 female in each mixed gender team during play. No bonus pins will be awarded to any athlete.
U16s may also compete in U22 Teams. U16s will bowl on 12 August and U22s on 13 August. All athletes must be either U16 and/or U22 this year i.e. 1 January - 31 December 2023.
U16s will bowl 6 games for total pinfall, with medals awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd. U22s will bowl 6 games for total pinfall with the top-4 teams bowling a 3 game round-robin, again for total pinfall, starting from zero, with medals awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th.
Q: Why single & mixed gender together?
Due to the pandemic many Counties are unable to field a single team of either gender. This would have excluded Counties from entering. As this is the first year post-pandemic we wanted to give as many athletes and their Counties as much opportunity as possible to compete once again in this popular, much coveted flagship event.
Q: No Bonus Pins?
With modern equipment and the undeniable abilities of our young athletes we do not think it necessary to add bonus pins to athletes scores.
So that we can finalise costs we ask that you register your intent to enter teams before the end of January 2023 by replying to this email. PLEASE ADVISE the number of teams you intend to enter in both U16 and U22 Divisions. We will ask for athlete details once we have all of the intents processed.
All enquiries please by reply to this email.
Regards,
Stuart Watson

Very many congrats to my wonderful husband on winning the first senior Resdev tournament of this year. A great day on a very hard pattern. Many thanks to all at Chesterfield bowl for a their hard work but extra special thanks to Jack Smith for running yet another successful event. It was really so great to be back on the lanes but mainly catching up with all the lovely people we haven’t seen for so long. Many congrats to Andy Preece who finished second and Louise Roberts for finishing third. Well done to these three and to all who bowled making the tournament such a success.
